I was at the "Au pont du rock" festival saturday night and fishbone was playing for a very short set (1H10)... So here is my 2 cent review...
As usually it's always a great pleasure to see fishbone live but my 7th Fishbone show was perhaps the less good that i've seen... I can't say the baddest because i think it was a very good show for people who had never seen this band but for people who know what can been done by the band hugh!!!....
So the lineup:
- Angelo C. Moore / Vocals, Saxophones, Theremin
- John Norwood Fisher / Bass, Vocals
- John Steward / Drums
- John McKnight / Keyboards, Trombone, Guitar
- Rocky George / Guitars
- Dre Gipson / Keyboards and toasting
- Curtiss ??? / Trumpet
The setlist ... as i can remember ... not sure ..
1 Dr Madd Vibe
2. Party At Ground Zero
3. Ma & Pa
4. the song with Steward's old school rap...
5. Premadawnutt
7. Alcoholic
8. Rub a dub Soldier - The Suffering
9. Freddie's dead
10. Everyday Sunshine
11. Sunless saturday
Can't remember if there was other songs...
To begin with something positive, i found Dre Gipson really better than during the last march european tour... He was there to "arranguer" (can someone translate this in english) the crowd because Angelo cannot... Angelo was (i think, not sure) very tired ( or just drunk) so he had to concentrate on his playing and singing so it was the calmest Angelo i've ever seen... very strange to see that when you know the man... The songs were good as usually and i dance and jump all the show but we miss something ... Sorry for the band cause in front of a 10 0000 crowd it could be a good way to recruit new fishbone soldier ... not this time i think... McKnight was playing so many guitar part that the horn section was very low in this set... less funk and soul vibration let more place to rock sound... I didn't hear a lot the new trumpet player but he seemed easy with the songs ... The sound of Angelo saxophones was so low that we can't here it... No encore because of the time limit... shit, it's my first frustrating experience with fishbone, i don't like it...
The Au Pont du Rock 2005 festival (15th anniversary) was not a good edition for me, the sound was very bad (especially the bass too strong), too many band with very short set (11 band in 10 hour!!)... I think it was not a good show for the bands too... Sad because "Au pont du rock" is usually a good Festival in a very nice old village from the middle-age (Malestroit)... Some real good band present this year did some minor show (Fishbone, AS Dragon, Alpha Blondy, )... Only Inner terrestrial (ska punk from london) and Laetitia Sherrif (our french PJ Harvey) did some impressive show for me...
I bought the new Dr Madd Vibe at the merchandising (with more music than on others Dr Madd Vibe CD) and had a short conversation with the "Ter a Terre" manager (aka wolfunkind's guitarist) saying that the band was in a good way in a stable period, that Tori and Dre were just absent and not out of the band... we talk a little bit about how much we appreciate the Rocky's strange way of playing guitar ... He told me
that the US Management was a good and serious one ... 14th year after our Fishbone Baptem, me and my brother bought our first Fishbone T-shirt ...
Hope to see Fishbone in better condition next year (not in a festival)
