You pretty much covered it. Fishbone rocked as usual, but the show was poorly
organized. The place is normally a teen, or 18+ sorta hip hop house club and
the show was billed as Fishbone, Kottonmouth Kings, Spider Nick & the
Maddogs, (local ska band, who is actually really good) and 3 dj's. So you had
the three bands, but in between the three bands they had a dj spinning hip
hop music and a lot of younger kids breakdancing and dancing. It was funny
because before fishbone came on, the dj set was going on and a lot of the
kids who were there just to dance and had no idea who fishbone was were like
fuck this rock shit, go home. But when fishbone came on, they were dancing it
up and loving it and were so into it, whicjh as has been stressed many a time
on this list is the wonderful thing about fishbone. I was not impressed by
Kottonmouth Kings, your depiction of them was very accurate. I think the funny
thing was, when Fishbone went into breath, Walt was like "since Kottonmouth
Kings are from LA, lets get one of them up here and freestyle about the
LAPD". Well, there lead guy got up there and was trying but was so weak and
then some kid who was probably just there for the club night got up there and
freestyled 10 times better than the guy from Kottonmouth kings. But overall,
very small club, poorly organized, not one of the better fishbone shows i've
been to, but still a fishbone show, which is better than any other. I am so
tired, but I am going to try to make it out to my apartment in Jersey, which
is 5 minutes from the Montclair show to catch the show at 4.
Peace,
Vijay
Setlist
i dont think they played everything on the list (esp towards the end of the set) but its been years
Here's most of what I remember from the show - due to tech problems and other bullshit, Fishbone didn't appear until 1:30AM - good sets from LI ska band Spider Nick and the Mad Dogs and LA Beasties/ISP clones Kottonmouth Kings - band was loose and funky,as you might imagine they would be at that hour - bailed out around 3:15, but here's what came before, in no particular order:
Unyielding
Party
Question of Life
Ugly
Skankin'
Donuts, Cigarettes and Coffee jam
Selection
Problems
Bonin'
Housework
Warmth of your Breath
Beergut
Cholly
Lemon Meringue
Ma and Pa
Alcoholic
Give it Up
Also, Norwood said there should be a Nuttstalk '99 sometime this year - he's waiting for Bad Brains to be available so he can schedule dates - hopefully around harvest time (he don't call it NuttSTALK for nuttin... :)
