Very great Show in Paris!
The Band played for 2 hours and a half ...
Norwood after the "encore" said to the crowd they could keep on playin' for longer time but they had to stop because of the curfew. Anyway, the audience got enought time to apreciate a Set which I'll describe as one of their Freshiests, Funkiests, Tightests, Psychedeliests and Funniests I ever got to assist to OVER THE LAST TEN YEARS !
Fishbone is now in its element!
We have an expression in France to express one's hapinness, it's "To Feel like a Fish in the water" :
"Comme un Poisson dans l'Eau"...
And yesterday night I was so glad seeing the band because I felt Great Things were to come for them now...Artistically and humanly speaking...
The energy that emerged from the stage was one of a GREAT ORCHESTRA full of complicity AND dexterity.
The brass section led by Mr. Mc Knight, Dre and Angelo was very consistant and hopefully in the years to come we can expect a new palette of sound for the horns in the song writings.
On the song "They all have abandonned their hopes", the brass section played lower over a real slow tempo, a bit back off the beat bringing something really strong and moving to Angelo's raw singing. Something soothing was coming out of that song. Strangely, with these Blues connotations it felt like the song was better from the recording version.
Steward is a very impressive musician, a creative drummer in total complicity with the audience
Who else could play naked during a whole set ? ;/ )
Honestly, I felt he was really appreciated and it feels like he's very implied in the Music
Rocky George is a true gentleman, in total connection with each musician wether Norwood and Steward or during Angelo solos on Sax....
What About Norwood ? One of the best Bass Players alive...
But what can you say or write when you re facing such great talents... You would need 14 ears and 14 eyes to truly appreciate a Band like that in constant and creative evolution

The facts:
As always, the parisian crowds are great fishbone crowds. The Nouveau Casino is a rather small venue (capacity around 500 i'd say), but the show had been 100% sold out for 2 weeks and the venue was packed. Just when i got there, Laurent the booking agent told me he almost cancelled the gig because Wood had missed the plane (yes!) and Rocky had spent most of the 12h flight on beer. Anyway, Norwood gets into paris at 18:30, they somehow arrange a warwick bass since his is lost somewhere along with his luggage... Tori did not make the trip (some paying gigs with Morris Day and the Time) but might join them later, probably Geneva. McNutt was there.

they had to drop a few songs due to an 11:00 curfew, but played for a good 1:45minutes. Among the dropped songs (from what wood told me) Faceplant and Another Generation (and probably Change).

This was probably one the fastest tempo fishbone show i've seen (but it might just eb an impression). Steward, sporting a new attire (or maybe as old as he is), was on fire. Beergut was so fast i thought he'd collapse at the end. All the songs were tight, the full horns and backing vocals section add depth to the sound. Keys you can actually hear ! a lot of fun on stage a some astonished looks from virgin members of the crowd response. Angelo still Angelo at 39+. Recited Junkies prayer from the crowd and from the counter of the side bar, then jumping right into the crowd for the first verse of Freddie.

my feelings:
this is a strong lineup doing 100% of the job expected from your average soldier (maybe even 110%). But je suis rest? sur ma faim as we say in French. They did not fully fulfill my expectations. Even though i'd only heard 1.5 show from the post Spacey/Walt lineup (and one of them being the viper room all stars show) before last night, there was not a moment of surprise. If Fishbone markIV want to mark their territory and show that they are not the same fishbone as in the 90s, 95s and 00s, they have to take it to the next level. People will keep on comparing this lineup to the Reality lineup and thats fair enough considering the setlist (and if given the choice, i take one '91 show for 10 '03-05 shows)... but can you really compare apples and oranges? They need to bring in strong new material (the couple new songs i heard were good) and not just play it safe. They need to rearrange old songs and add jams (which was not really possible with spacey's surgical approach, the moreso after Mcknight's no show). I tried to tell that to wood, but i guess it'll need some more work (and we weren't both under our best light)... But then, having heard 100+ shows either live or recorded, i know all their tricks and am not easily surprised, i guess i'm not your average soldier (no value judgement implied) and a good business bet might be to cater for the average soldier, the market is wider...

FishBone is (Still ?) Red Hot ! Toujours Chaud Bouillant... Voilà. Je suis Fan de FishBone et, après le concert d'hier soir, ça ne va pas s'arranger. Hier soir. Nouveau Casino. J'arrive vers 20h00. Le teMps de faire un tour au Merchandising et de (Enfin !) acquérir la Dr. Madd Vibe's Comprehensive Linkology ainsi que ce Comic Book + CD (Note : si quelqu'un veut me racheter/?changer le CD The Yin Yang Thang, j'ai un exemplaire en rab')... Et Me voilà dans la salle. Vestiaire (3 €). Une bière (3,5 € !). Ouf... Wolfunkind entre en scène. Que dire ? C'est de la Fusion (Souvenez-vous ! Ce truc Funk/Metal à la FFF qui sévissait dans les années 90... Une scène où l'on rangeait des trucs COMme les Red Hot Chili Peppers, Urban Dance Squad, Living Color ou FishBone !)... De la Fusion drôle (Festive ? Genre Marcel & Son Orchestre ?). C'est honnête. Sans plus... Il faut dire que tout le Monde attend FishBone, ça n'aide pas... Bref. Wolfunkind nous parle des Rappers, des Metalleux, de Starsky & Hutch, de Martine (La reine du Dancefloor ?)... Fin du concert. Et Wolfunkind (Enfin, son Guitariste/Patron du Label Ter à Terre... Le label qui distribue FishBone !) nous parle du prix des CDs, nous dit que le CD (Double !) de Wolfunkind est à 5 €. Wolfunkind : des p'tits gars COMme il faut... Militants ?

Changement de plateau... Merveilleux changement de plateau puisque, en fond sonore, on peut entendre le "People's Choice" de No Means No (Pour ceux qui n'ont pas suivi... J'adore No Means No !). Pendant le changement de plateau, je crois qu'un couillon M'a fait un cocard (Ou alors je l'ai choppé après dans le PoGo ?)... Enfin, c'est une autre histoire (Petite blessure de concert & Co). Test batterie : 1... 2... Micro. Installation du Theremin. That's it ! Et...

... Voil? le GRAND MOMENT ! FishBone entre en scène ! Un frisson (Obligatoire. Entre plaisir et angoisse : vont-ils être Bons ou aussi "Bof ? Bof ! Moyens..." que la dernière fois que je les aie vus ? Ah... Mieux vaut ne pas se souvenir du FishBone des 90's car, tout COMme Denis, j'échangerai volontiers 10 Shows d'aujourd'hui contre 1 Show de 1991). Le concert... Je vous donne d'abord la Playlist (Officielle/Officieuse ? Très gentiment donnée par Pastor Dre/Trompette + Voix... Un P'tit gars coiff? iroquois qui assure. Pastor Dre, U're THE Man !) :

OK. L'entrée en matière est bonne... Aujourd'hui, j'ai tendance à préférer le Dr. Madd Vibe à FishBone, alors entendre Angelo Moore (Chant + Saxophone + Theremin) nous réciter, d'entrée, le "Fishbone Soldier" (Un Spoken Words), ça le fait... Et puis, ça sent bon le rappel des troupes, le Tribute... Les FishBone Soldiers, c'est nous, le public ! Et puis... Et puis... Et puis, si l'on regarde bien, on (Je) voit que les FishBone Mark IV (Le nouveau Line-Up) ont le sourire, ils déconnent... Ils sont heureux* d'être l?... La bonne blague du soir est l'oeuvre de John Steward (Batterie) : il est nu (Et il le restera tout le concert ! Je peux donc le dire : "J'ai vu la bite de John Steward !"... Mais je ne suis pas sûr que cela Me soit bien utile ? Qu'en pensez-vous ?). Donc, l'entrée en matière est bonne. Le groupe attaque sur "Unyielding Conditioning" (Qui n'est pas Ma chanson préférée... Mais la section cuivre assure : Low-Tempo et appliquée).

Je COMmence à noter les différences... Rocky George à la Guitare (Un ex-Suicidal Tendencies. Je crois que j'ai un vieux Médiator de Rocky George quelque part ? Lorsque, à la fin du concert, il a salué, j'ai failli crier "S.T." !)... Il y a aussi ce petit jeune coiffé iroquois (Pastor Dre !) qui a pris la place de "Dirty" Walt... C'est peut-être le truc dont j'avais le plus peur : l'absence de "Dirty" Walt (Parce qu'avec Angelo Moore, ils formaient un duo implacable !)... Et bien, au final, Pastor Dre a assuré COMme un chef. Excellente recrue ! The FishBone Crew is alive and STRONG !

Il existe, entre les Membres de ce FishBone Mark IV, une belle osmose. Musicalement, ça colle... Pour ce qui est du jeu de scène, du délire Made In FishBone Land (Tel qu'il se pratiquait au début des 90's), je dirais... Wait & See. Le potentiel est là. 3... 2... 1... Ignition... J'attends le Lift Off de la fusée FishBone (Dans deux semaines, je serai à Lyon pour savoir si, oui ou non, FishBone is back ?). Je croise les doigts... FishBone will be back !

Back to Le Nouveau Casino. Angelo Moore fait du Angelo Moore... Sur "Party at Ground Zero", il nous gratifie d'un petit Stage Diving. Puis (Deux chansons plus tard), le voilà qui fend la foule et se sert du bar du Nouveau Casino COMme d'une estrade : "Junkie's Prayer"... Jolie cascade. Impressionnante... Mais déjà vue. Une chose est claire, Angelo Moore tient la forme... Il suffit de voir le p'tain de sourire, la p'tain de grimace, sur son visage. Rictus.

Puis l'épisode de la chaussure. Le pauvre Angelo, lors de ses multiples acrobaties, a perdu sa chaussure droite et sa semelle orthopédique (Et oui ! Angelo Moore ? 39 ans - porte des semelles orthopédiques !). Je ne suis pas peu fier de vous dire que c'est Moi (Oui ! Moi !) qui les aie retrouvées... Si ça c'est pas un rêve de fan** ! Au premier rang, ? Mes pieds, la chaussure et la semelle d'Angelo... Je lui tends. Remerciements. Keep On Playing... Le concert continue.

(Interlude) Quelques chansons plus tard, j'ai retrouvé des clefs. J'espère que leur propriétaire les a retrouvées. Deux bonnes actions en une soirée... Encore une et je vais au Paradis ?

Le concert continue. Les chansons s'enchaînent... Rapides et frénétiques (J'adore "Skank N'Go Nuttz" et "Beergut"... Où l'on apprend que Rocky George est un amateur de bière ! Beautiful anecdotes. J'aiMe quand les groupes parlent/COMmuniquent avec le public). OK. J'vous le répète... En vrai, il n'y avait pas vraiment de surprise dans la prestation de FishBone (Mais ceux qui ne les ont jamais vus finiront sur le cul... Les yeux grands ouverts !). Non. Pas vraiment de surprise... Mais, en ce qui Me concerne, une impression générale de bonheur, de joie retrouvée... De la candeur peut-être ? Le nouveau FishBone est là !

Et pour finir, je parlerai du couvre-feu... LA maladie chronique du Nouveau Casino. COMbien de groupes ont-ils dû écourter leur concert parce qu'au Nouveau Casino, vers 23h00/00h00, c'est Clubbing (Oui ! Cette activité qui fait rentrer de l'argent !) ? Trop ? Mon goût et FishBone n'a pas échapper à la règle... A la trappe "Subliminal Fascism" (Une très jolie chanson de bourrin !) et "Alcoholic" (Un hymne !)... "Servitude" et "Suffering"... Sans parler des chansons qui ne faisaient même pas partie de la Playlist (Mais que j'aurais bien écoutées !) COMme "It All Kept Startin' Over Again" ou alors "Bonin' In The Boneyard" (Parfaite pour les improvisations Jazz), "Swim", "Karma Tsunami" (Aujourd'hui Politically Incorrect ?)... Encore ! Encore ! Encore !

* : heureux ou rassurés car, on l'apprendra plus tard, Norwood Fisher (Basse) a failli louper le concert pour 'cause de 'blèmes d'avion (De papiers ?), de conneries...

** : non, un vrai fan aurait conservé la semelle pour l'idolâtrer (dans son autel dédié à Angelo Moore/FishBone ou (Pire ?) se branler dessus... Ou les deux ? Let's talk about VOOdoo. Is Jah Jah on the phone ? Good God !

haha what a strange day, this day...
I was so sick, with mega fever... And I couldn't accept to stay at home, I could not missed FISHBONE ! The last time was so far...
I took 2 magic pills : CLARADOL 500mg (paracetamol + cafeine) one time to go there.
And this evening was so GREAT !
So happy to see the band on stage,
The Live was without surprised, when you know fishbone in live, but anyway fishbone was great as often, the music had the good flow.
Angelo is still angelo, a nice mad person, living for his art. I love him. I like so much when he did his junkie's prayor, among the crowd, and go ahead directly on the bar, and give a stage divin'

I was so happy to see Rocky on stage with The fishteam, he seemed like a bit "lost", with a light playguitar part, (but it was maybe me, i was sick you know ^^) But was laughing smiling often, (like the other guyz) so that was really a pleasure.

it was maybe not the best gig ever, but that was a real great moment, like often with Fishbone, with jokes (a angelo's shoe lost in the pit/crowd, John (drummer) naked...)...

One thing that i'm sure, I was really better after the show, FISHBONE has somethin' of magic...
